Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary has numerous definitions for the word, REACH. The definitions, which particularly caught my eye, were “an individual part of a progression or journey,” and “to stretch one self repeatedly.”
Let us think about these two definitions and attempt to compare these with our Masonic teachings. At our Altar of Obligation, each of us took an oath or obligation, to begin practicing these two definitions without even being aware of their existence.
We all began at the same point. We all pledged our allegiance to the teachings of our grand fraternity and in so doing, we have joined in that “progression.” And how many times, have each of us stretched ourselves, repeatedly?” The five points of fellowship can certainly attest to that.
The journey referred to is our personal journey; the journey we begin, from the moment of initiation, until the moment of death. The journey we, as true Masons make, is one whereby each of us strives to make some other person wiser and better, and who, for that purpose, constantly strives to become ourselves, wiser and better. Along our journey, we attempt to fulfill that which we regard as the noblest and proudest destiny of man. We sow, that others may reap; we work and plant for those who are to occupy this earth when we are gone, and to bless with the glorious gifts of Truth, Light and Liberty, those who will never know the name of the giver.
This could very well refer to our acts of compassion towards the down - trodden and less fortunate. Our Masonic Home is a prime example of this definition. What greater act of compassion and concern could be exemplified?
Another example of REACH is our Masonic Model Student Assistance Program, whereby we assist educators in recognizing children at risk; such as, the dangers of substance abuse by children and young adults, physical abuse, and even suicide.
REACH, is, “A reassuring presence, a LIGHT when times are dark, a hand reaching out.” REACH is MASONRY! These my Brothers, are the true meanings of REACH.
R - REMEMBER
